Robert Abel, Jr., M.D.
Robert Abel Jr MD earned his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in 1969, completed his ophthalmology residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York and was a Cornea Fellow at the University of Florida. A board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Abel is a former Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University and is on the staff of the Christiana Care Health System. He founded eye banks in Delaware and internationally. He teaches locally and internationally on numerous subjects, ocular disease, and integrative eye care. He has instructed Cornea Microsurgery Workshops at the American Academy of Ophthalmology, received the Academy’s Honor Award and Senior Honor Award and co-founded the Academy’s Committee of International Ophthalmology. Dr. Abel has numerous publications and chapters on his research for corneal transplants and infectious disease. He holds two patents on artificial corneas and is a member of Mensa.
Dr. Abel is the author of the popular book, “The Eye Care Revolution,” which teaches patients how to treat and manage common vision problems. Rob Abel MD has written other health books, two medical thrillers, and three children’s books as well. He has done humanitarian work internationally. His community service includes Pacem in Terris whose mission is making a more peaceful world and has Delaware children creating art for peace. As a board member of Delaware’s Vision to Learn he has assisted in the establishment of a mobile eye van that has provided 12,000 children with free eye exams and glasses. He has formulated eye vitamins for four companies; EyeComplexCS and NovaSight are the most recent.
Dr. Abel created the website Eye Advisory providing integrative medical options. He has been voted “TOP DOC” by Delaware Today Magazine numerous times, most recently in 2019, along with other Delaware Ophthalmology Consultant physicians.
